Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory
Just when I was beginning to think that the election of Barack Obama might mean there was still hope for the US after all, I see three items in today's news that incline me to despair.
First, conservatives in Arizona and other states are stockpiling firearms and ammunition in response to Obama's win. It's easy to forget, in the flush of victory, that 57 million people voted for McCain. They haven't gone away, you know! Though the country has to some extent redeemed itself, the question must be asked: how could 57 million people be so stupid?
Second, the craven cowardly Democrats let Joe Benedict Arnold Liebershit keep his powerful chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee as a reward for his attempts to sabotage his own party's presidential candidate. Liebershit repeatedly went on the stump for McCain and Palin, and echoed their lies about Obama being unpatriotic and palling around with terrorists.
This is insane! While the rethugs are rallying behind a seven-count convicted felon (that's item number three), the Dems can't even take action against a traitor who stabbed them in the back. It's not about revenge - it's suicidal for the party to give that much power and input to a man who is working to undermine a core element of the Democratic platform. The Dems have a clear mandate to get out of Iraq, Zell-Miller-in-a-yarmulke is pushing the McCain approach of staying there for 100 years, and the party lets him continue to set policy and wield power on the issue? Unbelievable!
The other side has all the guns, and all we have is a flock of timid, snivelling sheep without even the herding instinct to make them stick together. Tell me again, who won the election?

I've been wondering about that. While I don't have any illusions about Obama being actually to the left of, say, Clinton, I don't think Obama is stupid enough to expect Lieberman to be loyal to the Democrats in exchange for this. That means Lieberman is being left alone for a reason, and I can only think of two: 1. Obama has a controversial initiative which Lieberman is likely to support, and doesn't want to give him any excuse to back out. Lieberman is, for example, pro-choice, despite being basically a Republican. 2. Obama is planning on disassembling the Department of Homeland Security, and he figures he may as well leave Lieberman in charge of it so that actual Democrats can be put in charge of the pieces that are pulled apart. I don't think this is as likely, but I'd love to see it happen. It'd sure wipe the smug smirk off of Lieberman's face. (Reply) |
