Proposition Hate

Tuesday night did not bring unalloyed victory, of course. Crazed loons like James Inhofe are still in the senate. We are short of a filibuster-proof majority. And, most frustrating of all for many people, gay-bashing ballot initiatives have passed in Arizona, Florida and even California.

The Mormon church spent massive amounts of money ramming through Proposition 8 in California. I don't understand why they are allowed to remain a tax-exempt organization. And I really don't understand the mentality that fuels their hatred and loathing of gay people. How the hell is it any of their business what strangers in another state are doing in private with their various bodily appendages and orifices?

Does anyone else see the irony of the Mormons, of all people, chanting stridently that marriage means one man and one woman? Of course the Sex Police are all about controlling other people's private lives, never about living up to the standards they seek to impose as the law of the land. For Mormons themselves, marriage often means one 51-year-old man, one fourteen-year-old girl, her twelve-year-old sister, and so on. Or perhaps one 18-year-old boy, several 12-year-old boys, and one broomstick. When you have all the power and the money, rules are only for the little people.

My only hope is that some good will come out of this bitter setback, in the form of increased scrutiny of the blatant politicking and abuse of power by the Mormon church, and ridicule of their lunatic beliefs. Perhaps some younger and less rigid and reactionary Mormons will question their adherence to a secretive cult that destroys so many lives.

Memo to Mormons: Butt out! If you don't like gays, keep your magic underpants on and stay in Utah!
