Housekeeping announcements

First of all, I'm glad to announce that I finally fixed a long-lived bug in the comments code, knock on wood (raps self on head - ouch). When commenting, you can click on "(Reply)" in someone else's comment and reply to it, and your comment will show up as "in reply to Fred" or whatever name the other commenter gave, instead of "in reply to Original article." It was always supposed to work that way, but there was a tricky bug which took a long time to figure out and eradicate.

Secondly, in response to a recent slew of spam, I've added a captcha check in the comments form. Not only does this fight spam, it helps to digitize old books, as explained here. So I hope you will excuse the inconvenience as it's in a good cause.
